Demonstration outside Parliament

Police, fire brigade and coast guard officers’ unions concluded a 24-hour sit-in before the House of Parliament yesterday, demanding higher pay and better training. The leaders of the three unions at one point handcuffed themselves together, and union members shouted slogans as Prime Minister Costas Simitis arrived in Parliament. Union representatives visited New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis yesterday and said they would take their protest to Brussels. On the other hand, the report on Turkey will express optimism regarding Greek-Turkish relations, on account of the contacts between foreign ministers George Papandreou and Ismail Cem (who visited Athens on Wednesday and Thursday), and the various agreements and confidence-building measures adopted by the two countries.
