Dancers in traditional costume perform yesterday near the village of Maniaki, in the southern Peloponnese, where President Costis Stephanopoulos unveiled a statue of Papaflessas, a hero of the 1821 Greek War of Independence. Papaflessas and 600 Greeks died during a battle with Ibrahim Pasha and 6,000 Turks on May 20, 1825. Stephanopoulos dismissed controversy about the exact site of the battle as unimportant.
