Facebook thanks Greek Police for helping take down Lecpetex botnet
Facebook has thanked Greek Police for its help in taking down a little-known spamming botnet called Lecpetext.
“We would like to thank the Head of the Greek Cyber Crime Division and the police officers involved for the professionalism they showed while investigating this malware,” the California-based company said in a statement posted on its website.
Last week, police in Athens arrested two Greeks who allegedly developed the botnet that used hacked computers to mine the Litecoin virtual currency. The virus is believed to have affected as many as 50,000 Facebook accounts and as many as 250,000 computers across the world.
“Staying ahead of the latest threats is a complex job, and Lecpetex was a particularly persistent malware family,” Facebook said.
“We hope this example will illustrate that cooperation can be helpful and productive in shutting down botnets, particularly when criminals abuse multiple online platforms to achieve their aims,” the company said.
