Man faces charges for claiming illegal pension

A 70-year-old man in Athens is facing charges for claiming the pension of his wife’s dead cousin for over a year after the woman’s death.

According to the case file, the 70-year-old used a cash card to withdraw the retirement pay deposited by social security fund IKA from ATM machines.

The woman reportedly died in November 2012 but relatives failed to report the death. IKA eventually halted payments in March 2014.

The state estimates that the wrongfully claimed pension came to 11,500 euros, a sum which it has already launched proceedings to recoup.
