Gunfire in central Athens; reports of arrest of fugitive terrorist [Update]

Greek authorities say there has been an exchange of gunfire in the Athens tourist district of Monastiraki, during what appeared to be a robbery attempt on a jewelry shop. At least three people have been wounded.

Police say one of the wounded in Wednesday’s shootout has been arrested and his identity is being checked.

Local media report it is believed to be Nikos Maziotis, a fugitive convicted of terrorism last year for participation in Revolutionary Struggle, a group active between 2003 and 2009. Police say they will not release any information on his identity until it is confirmed through fingerprint checks.

An Associated Press photographer on the scene said an ambulance left the area, while witnesses said a passer-by — a tourist from Australia — was among the injured. [AP]
