Fugitive’s arrest not a ‘chance event’ says minister
The arrest of one of Greece’s most wanted men in central Athens on Wednesday was not a chance event according to Public Order Minister Vassilis Kikilias.
Speaking on Mega channel on Thursday Kikilias noted that police operations under way following the detention of Nikos Maziotis, leader of leftist guerilla group Revolutionary Struggle, in Monastiraki on Wednesday were leading to fresh information regarding the organization’s activities.
Meanwhile, police operations under the code name “Theseus” comprising 800 police officers combating illegal commerce and other illegal activities around Athens were also under way noted Kikilias.
The minister also hailed the efforts of a female member of the counter-terrorist squad who trailed Maziotis in the beginning of the police operation on Wednesday.
According to Kathimerini sources, police were also closing in on Panayiota Roupa, wife of Maziotis, as well as November 17 hit man Christodoulos Xeros, who disappeared during a prison furlough in January.
