Turkish vessel enters Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone

A Turkish research vessel entered Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on Monday morning, according to the government in Nicosia.

The Barbaros, accompanied by two support vessels, entered the Cypriot EEZ at around 6.30 a.m. The move comes a few days after Turkey issued a maritime order, or NAVTEX, for the area. This prompted Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades to freeze reunification talks with Turkish-Cypriots.

Russia is also conducting military exercises in the same area but with Cyprus’s permission. Russian navy ships are due to be operating off the island until October 23.

Anastasiades is due to chair a meeting of Cyprus’s national council at 10 a.m. to decide how to react to the latest actions from Turkey.
