Thirteen indicted for inmate torture

Thirteen correctional officers and their former warden will stand trial in Serres, northern Greece, over the death of Albanian inmate Ilie Kareli on March 27 at Nigrita Prison.

Kareli was transferred to Nigrita after killing a guard at Malandrino Prison in central Greece the previous day. CCTV footage showed Kareli being escorted by guards into a waiting room and then, bruised and half-undressed, to his cell, where he died.

“Correctional officers of Nigrita Prison subjected the inmate systematically and without pause to torture in order to punish him for their colleague’s death,” the indictment read, adding that the beating he sustained ultimately led to his death.

A date for the trial has not been set.
