Finance Minister appeals for support for amendments ahead of vote

Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis on Friday called on MPs across the political spectrum to support a series of legislative amendments proposed by his ministry, including a recommendation to allow those with debts to the state to repay their dues in up to 100 installments but also the extension for two years of a so-called solidarity tax on income,

ahead of a vote in the House in the afternoon.

In comments to Skai television, leftist SYRIZA MP Panagiotis Lafazanis indicated that his party may tolerate the provision give debtors more breathing space.

Another SYRIZA lawmaker Yiannis Milios told Mega television that his party would revoke the solidarity tax on income, which was introduced as an emergency measure at the peak of the crisis but has been extended. Earlier this month, the government announced that the solidarity tax would be reduced by 30 percent.

A few hours before the vote, sources indicated that SYRIZA would vote against the extension of the solidarity tax and would vote present on the proposal to increase installments to debtors.
