Traffic accidents rise 1.3 pct in August, year-on-year

The number of traffic accidents in Greece that caused death or injury rose by 1.3 percent in August this year compared to the same month in 2013, figures released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) on Friday have shown.

In numbers, 1,059 crashes were reported in the last month of the summer this year, up from 1,045 last year.

ELSTAT also reported that these 1,059 accidents resulted in 89 people being killed, 149 suffering major injuries and 1,252 sustaining lighter injuries. Traffic accidents in August 2013 resulted in 113 deaths (21.2 percent more than this year), 153 major injuries (2.6 percent less than this year) and 1,161 people sustaining light injuries (7.8 percent more).

The figures were released as road safety campaigners have been pushing for the stricter enforcement of traffic laws following two deadly accidents in September that claimed a total of eight lives.
