Probe into report of effort to bribe MPs finds no clues

An investigation into a press report that businessmen were creating a fund to be used to bribe MPs to support the government’s presidential nominee in February has been shelved.

Prosecutor Panayiotis Panayiotopoulos delivered a report on Friday after questioning a number of witnesses but, according to sources, said that he found no evidence to back up the allegations made in a report published by Kontra News daily.

The newspaper’s editor, Emilios Liatsos, was one of those questioned by Panayiotopoulos but refused to reveal his sources for the story. The probe was launched after SYRIZA spokesman Panos Skourletis made reference to the report during a political discussion on a TV show.

Businessman Andreas Martinos, government spokeswoman Sofia Voultepsi and Skourletis were among those the prosecutor questioned.
