Rainfall in northern Greece claims a second life

A 63-year-old motorist was reported killed on Tuesday after his car was swept up in a flash flood on a rural road linking Scholario and Langada in Thessaloniki, northern Greece.

His sister-in-law, aged 63, was also in the vehicle when it got into trouble, but was rescued in time. She is being treated for hypothermia.

According to police, the road had been closed off to traffic since Monday afternoon due to heavy rainfall and the driver ignored warning of bad conditions ahead.

His death brings the death toll from the bad weather to two, after a farmer was killed in his tractor in a similar manner over the weekend.

Northern Greece has experienced heavy rainfall in the past few days, leading to flooding at the Gallikos and Evros rivers.

Authorities have closed several roads in the region due to flooding.
