Maria Damanaki to head Natural Conservancy’s ocean division
Greece’s Maria Damanaki, former EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is heading to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to lead the organization’s oceans division, it was announced Thursday.
During her tenure as EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Damanaki introduced the Blue Growth agenda which aimed at creating some 1.6 million jobs and 600 million euros in revenue by 2020. She is also credited with bringing fish populations to healthier levels.
Founded in 1951, The Nature Conservancy aims to protect lands and waters around the world. The organization employs over 4,500 people in more than 35 countries across the globe.
