PASOK chief reacts to Papandreou statement

PASOK chief Evangelos Venizelos on Friday shrugged off at suggestions made the previous day by his predecessor at the helm of the socialist party George Papandreou that he might form his own political movement if Greece heads to early elections.

“There is no such thing as inner-PASOK issues; there are only external issues about which we do not care,” said Venizelos who is also deputy prime minister and foreign minister in the conservative-led coalition.

In a six-page statement issued Thursday, Papandreou indicated that he would seek to take a central political role if the country has to hold early elections.

“If, unfortunately, there is not a positive outcome [to the presidential vote] and irresponsibility leads the country to national elections, we will all be called on to assume our responsibilities,” the former socialist premier said.
