Fear of floods after Evros rises above emergency level

Regional authorities in Macedonia and Thrace were on standby on Thursday after the Evros River rose 10 centimeters above the 4.70-meter emergency level.

The deputy regional governor of Evros, Dimitris Petrovic, said that heavy rainfall was exerting strong pressure on the dams of the Evros River, where the water level had increased to a worrying degree and had also swelled the waters of the Ardas River.

Rainfall over the past few days has caused some damage to farmland and homes, the extent of which remained unclear.
