Monastiraki restaurant fire prompts panic, restricted before spread

Firefighters managed to bring a large blaze that broke out at a restaurant in Monastiraki, central Athens, under partial control by late morning on Friday.

The fire service dispatched 21 firemen and seven fire engines to the scene after the blaze started shortly before 9 a.m. in the attic of the bar-restaurant. Firefighters managed to restrict the blaze to the roof and said there was no risk of it spreading to adjacent buildings in the busy tourist area.

The fire had released a thick cloud of smoke that rose dozens of meters above the restaurant and was visible in many parts of Athens.
