Two caught, one sought in supermarket robbery

Two would-be robbers who held up a supermarket in the Athens neighborhood of Petralona on Monday were detained after their thwarted raid.

A total of three robbers burst into the supermarket on Monday morning and told the cashiers to empty their registers. However, one of the employees activated the store’s silent alarm, alerting police.

One robber, aged 25, was arrested outside the store while the second, aged 27, fled on foot after an exchange of fire with police in the street.

The second assailant was arrested after visiting the capital’s Erythros Stavros Hospital for attention to a wound that he claimed he had sustained in a road accident but which hospital workers realized was a gunshot wound and alerted the police.

The third robber remained at large late on Monday.
