Truck driver in deadly northern Greece crash sentenced to 10 years

A 39-year-old Romanian truck driver was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Tuesday after a Thessaloniki court found him guilty of a road accident that killed six people and injured another 31 on the Egnatia Highway near Veria, in northern Greece.

The 39-year-old was behind the wheel of a truck that plowed into dozens of vehicles on a downhill stretch of the highway last October.

The trucker argued that he was unable to stop his vehicle after the brakes failed but he was found guilty of manslaughter through negligence and causing bodily harm.

The court ruled that the sentence can be paid off for 18,200 euros.
