Income criteria for students wishing to switch universities

The government aims to introduce income criteria to determine whether university students should be allowed to transfer to institutions closer to home, Education Minister Aristides Baltas told Sunday’s Ethnos.

Baltas said that details will be announced at a later stage but clarified that there would be limits on transfers based on the earnings of students’ parents. The previous government had relaxed the criteria for transfers in a bid to help families who could not afford the cost of sending their children to other cities to study. This, however, caused overcrowding in some university departments.

Baltas did not confirm that there would be 1,500 fewer university places in September, as a number of reports had stated.
