Turkey turns up the heat ahead of of CBM talks

As Athens and Ankara are said to be preparing for talks on confidence-building measures (CBMs) before the end of this month, officials at the Greek Foreign Ministry are concerned about the escalation of Turkish provocations in the Aegean Sea, Kathimerini understands.

In the most recent incident, the Turkish TCG Poyraz frigate on Friday remained within Greek territorial waters off the Dodecanese island of Agathonisi for about three hours.

According to the National Defense General Staff (GEETHA), the Turkish vessel was monitored by Greece’s navy throughout.

Diplomatic sources said the moves were a sign of Ankara’s efforts to cement its bargaining position ahead of upcoming CBM talks.
