Government to propose committee to examine Greece’s memorandums

The SYRIZA-led government is expected to submit a proposal for a parliamentary committee to examine the handling of the Greek debt crisis by previous administrations.

The proposal, which may be submitted by the end of the day, foresees a committee of experts that will be tasked with assessing whether previous governments upheld the interests of the Greek people by signing two agreements with the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund pledging austerity measures in exchange for bailout funding.

The so-called “memorandum committee” was one of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s pre-election pledges before his leftist party swept into power in late January.
