Border tank major is found hanged on base
The commanding officer of a border tank unit, one of whose soldiers was killed during manoeuvres last week, was found dead on Saturday on the grounds of his camp, having apparently hanged himself. The major’s body was discovered by soldiers in the Alexandroupolis unit’s tank depot early in the afternoon, according to an army announcement that only identified the officer as A.A., 46. Reports from the eastern Thracian city said the major, a married father of two, had hung himself with the laces of his army boots. An investigation has been ordered into the apparent suicide. Last Tuesday, Sergeant Stefanos Fakakis, 23, a professional soldier on a five-year contract serving in the major’s unit, was fatally wounded during an exercise north of Alexandroupolis when a hand grenade exploded beside him.
