Piraeus metro extension progressing but finish date now 2018
The extension of the Athens metro to the port of Piraeus is likely to be ready in early 2018 rather than mid-2017, as had been originally planned, officials said on Friday as the tunnel-boring machine reached the point where Nikaia station is to be constructed.
The borer has reached 3.4 of the total 6.5 kilometers it needs to travel in order to complete its work. It is expected to reach the next station, Maniatika, in eight months.
Attiko Metro CEO Christos Tsitouras said that the delay in the completion of the project is due to the technical difficulties in constructing the station at Piraeus, which will be located below sea level.
There are 800 people working on the project. This number is expected to rise to 2,000 by the time the project is completed.
