On the first day of a five-day strike…
On the first day of a five-day strike by university and technical college professors, faculty members staged a protest outside the Old University building in central Athens before marching to the Education Ministry to press their demand for a 20-percent increase over the next two years. High school teachers have called a strike on Oct. 6-7 and elementary school teachers are to decide today. National Economy Minister Nikos Christodoulakis – after a meeting with PM Costas Simitis, Education Minister Petros Efthymiou and PASOK General Secretary Michalis Chrysochoidis – said schoolteachers would get a monthly raise of 117-165 euros from Jan. 1, 2004. Professors have been offered 7 percent, which they rejected.
