Youth is shot dead at border

An 18-year-old Albanian was shot dead by a Greek border guard when he and five other would-be immigrants tried to cross the border late on Tuesday night. The guard reportedly claimed he had only fired warning shots as two of the Albanians tried to run away after walking into an ambush. Neither the victim nor the border guard were named in the report by Kastoria’s police directorate. The incident took place in the Ieropigi region. Three border guards accosted a party of six Albanians. According to the police report, one member of the patrol kept watch over four detainees and, as the other two Albanians ran back toward the border, a second guard gave chase. «While running, he fired two warning shots with his service pistol, believing that the fugitives were moving toward the third border guard, who was about 60 meters ahead of them,» the police statement said. The victim, fatally wounded, was taken to Kastoria hospital by ambulance. Doctors said the bullet had hit him in the back of the head. The guard and four Albanians were arrested.
