In an address to the General Assembly in New York yesterday, Foreign Minister George Papandreou spoke of the need for the UN to ‘play the lead role’ in Iraq. Regarding Greek-Turkish relations, he spoke of the two countries’ efforts to introduce a ‘new era,’ noting their agreement on Thursday to ratify an international pact banning land mines. Papandreou said Greece supported UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s efforts to achieve Cyprus’s reunification. He called on all nations in conflict to observe an Olympic Truce during the Athens 2004 Games.
