Forest fires
Forest fires in the first 10 months of this year have caused only a tenth of the destruction wreaked last year, the fire brigade chief said yesterday. In 12,548 fires between January and November, 9,255 hectares of forest were burnt. During the corresponding period last year, 14,855 fires destroyed 88,278 hectares of forest. Fire brigade chief Panayiotis Fourlas said this year’s results were due to better organization and more favorable weather conditions.
