Candidate for EFET VP post withdraws over Facebook views

A former Independent Greeks parliamentary candidate who was due to be appointed vice president of Greece’s food safety watchdog, EFET, withdrew her candidacy on Tuesday after PASOK and To Potami complained about posts on her Facebook page in which she expressed extreme views.

The two parties published a series of comments written by Foteini Athanasopoulou, who claims to be one of Independent Greeks’ founding members.

In the Facebook posts Athanasopoulou claims, among other things, to believe in chemtrails, to think that irregular immigration is part of a plot to make Muslims dominant in the Balkans, and to advocate that journalists who do not tell the truth should be shot.

Athanasopoulou said that her writings constituted “personal, not political” views but that she was stepping aside “because I do not want to put anyone in a difficult position.”
