Clinic chief convicted over deadly 2009 fire

The head of a private clinic in Thessaloniki was found guilty of negligence on Thursday in connection with a fire that led to a patient losing his life in 2009.

The local misdemeanors court heard that the 71-year-old patient was strapped to his bed at the time the fire broke out in his room.

He suffered third-degree burns and died 44 days later.

Although the blaze was started by another patient, the court found that there patients at the clinic were not monitored regularly.

The unnamed doctor received a two-year sentence, which will be suspended for three years.
