Fofi Gennimata elected new PASOK chief

Former minister Fofi Gennimata was elected as socialist PASOK’s new leader on Sunday. Gennimata was one of three candidates in the election which saw some 50,000 party members casting their ballots across Greece.

Gennimata, daughter of late PASOK official Giorgos Gennimatas, garnered over 50 percent of the vote, leaving behind former minister Andreas Loverdors and Odysseas Constantinopoulos.

The leadership race followed the resignation of Evangelos Venizelos earlier in June. Back then Venizelos said he was resigning as president, but “not giving up politics.” He also said he accepted the party’s poor results in January’s general elections.

PASOK was established by Andreas Papandreou in 1974.
