State of emergency for Samos

A man on a tricycle splashes along a road on the island of Samos, which was afflicted by extensive flooding and landslides yesterday following torrential overnight rains. A state of emergency was declared as hundreds of houses and shops were flooded. The airport was closed until late afternoon, while electricity and telephone systems were down for much of the day. Thousands of hectares of the island’s forests were destroyed by fire two years ago, leading to widespread erosion.
