Teenage girl killed in downtown Athens fire

A 16-year-old girl was killed on Tuesday morning in a fire that broke out in the apartment where she was living with her family in the downtown Athens area of Omonia.

The fire started around 2 a.m. on the first floor of an old two-story building on Menandrou Street, the largest part of which was home to a family of five and the rest used as a storage facility.

Police officers who responded first to calls for help were able to rescue the mother and two of the three daughters, aged 5 and 20. Firefighters arriving a few minutes later evacuated the father but were unable to save the family’s third daughter, who was already dead by that time.
