Driver in deadly 2014 Athens crash given 12-year sentence

An Athens court on Thursday handed a 12-year prison sentence to a 28-year-old Albanian national who lost control of his vehicle and killed three people on Petrou Ralli Street in October last year.

A 24-year-old woman, a 30-year-old mother of two and a 23-year-old police officer died when the 28-year-old ran a red light and hit a group of pedestrians.

Ervis Marku was to be jailed after the court found him guilty of a string of charges including driving under the influence of narcotics.

In an appearance in court last month, the 28-year-old apologized to the victims’ families and said he had no recollection of the accident, claiming he may have suffered an epileptic fit when he lost control of his vehicle.

His request to appeal the verdict was turned down.
