Stamati makes 50,000-euro bail payment

Viki Stamati, the convicted wife of jailed ex-minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, on Tuesday made the bail payment of 50,000 euros that secures her transfer to house arrest after she was granted release on the condition that she paid the security deposit.

Stamati has fought the demand for bail for the past two months on the grounds that capital controls prevented her from getting the money together. After losing her appeal in several courts, she faced re-incarceration at the Athens psychiatric facility where she had been in custody after suffering a nervous breakdown earlier this year.

Her lawyers on Tuesday submitted the receipt of payment which will allow Stamati to remain under house arrest for the remainder of her sentence for laundering money acquired by her husband in kickbacks for defense contracts.
