Main suspect in Hydra murder remanded in pretrial custody

A 38-year-old Georgian man arrested in Athens last week over the murder of a taverna owner on the island of Hydra in August, was placed in pretrial custody on Monday.

Police believe the 38-year-old was the ringleader of a gang that broke into the 67-year-old victim’s home with the intention of robbing him. They gagged the victim and beat him brutally, causing his death from cardiac arrest.

The Georgian denies the charges, challenging evidence of his DNA being found on a bottle believed to contain a sleeping drug given to the victim.

Seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder.
