Civil servants plan rally on Tuesday against pension reform

Civil servants’ union ADEDY has organized a protest rally at 6 p.m. in downtown Athens on Tuesday to coincide with a Parliamentary debate on the government’s proposals to overhaul the country’s social security system.

The rally will begin at Klafthmonos Square, with protesters then heading to Parliament, meaning that several streets in the downtown area will be closed to traffic.

“The reactionary bill can and should be blocked… by the power of an uprising of the workforce and the people, with the immediate escalation of all forms of action, rallies, sit-ins, road blocks, the general strike of February 4 and further escalation, so that the coalition does not even dare table it,” ADEDY said in an announcement on Monday.

The union said that the draft bill favors the “fresh looting of pensions, with the victims being all pensioners and particularly those retiring after the bill is ratified.”
