Government seeks more transparency in party finances
The government is exploring measures to increase transparency in the funding of political parties, amid growing pressure from international creditors and authorities at the European Commission.
The measures being mulled include more oversight of political parties’ finances, tougher terms for loans from banks and stricter regulations regarding private donations.
The General Secretariat Against Corruption has been tasked with working out the legal framework of the reforms. These may include a complete ban on donations from individuals and companies to parties and parliamentary candidates.
Another measure being pondered is for changes to the committee overseeing party finances so that politicians constitute a minority rather than a majority.
