Officer arrested for bogus weapons theft

Officers of the Greek Police’s internal affairs unit on Monday said that they had arrested a 39-year-old policeman for falsely declaring the theft of his weapons after he discovered that he was scheduled to be dismissed for securing his position with a forged high school graduation certificate.

Police also arrested the man’s sister and a friend of his, both aged 39, who are alleged to have backed up his false statement and to have helped him hide the weapons.

Two service pistols and the officer’s identity card were discovered in the elevator shaft of his friend’s apartment block along with another pistol, a revolver, several rounds of ammunition and two hand grenades.

The officer reported the bogus burglary on Sunday just a few hours after news of the decision to dismiss him was sent to his department.
