Checks reveal fake diplomas

Almost 695,000 degrees and other qualifications belonging to civil servants were checked last year, revealing some 960 to be forged.

Around two-thirds of the documents that were deemed not to be genuine were high school diplomas, while 109 were fake documents showing the holders had been to primary school. Checks are currently being carried out on another suspect 1,995 suspicious documents belonging to 952 civil servants.

Dozens of civil servants have been dismissed as a result of the checks. The Justice Ministry said 22 employees under its authority had been fired, while three more may follow. Of those 25, 23 worked in Greek prisons and the other two at the ministry.
