Strangled policeman found in car trunk

A 40-year-old police officer, found dead in the trunk of his car in the western Athenian district of Aegaleo early yesterday morning, had been strangled by someone using their hands, coroner Nikos Karakoukis said. Constantinos Maounis, who had left his home in Ilion to buy a newspaper from central Omonia Square shortly after midnight on Saturday, as was his habit, was found with his trousers around his ankles, but medical tests showed no signs that he had been involved in sexual activity, according to police. Maounis had been stripped of cash and his wallet, although police did not confirm that robbery had been the reason for the crime and were investigating possible motives for his murder. However, they said that the father of two, who served at the police station of Petroupolis, did not appear to have any «personal differences.»
