Kastoria schoolboys smoke most
About a third of senior high-school pupils in Thessaloniki and western Macedonia smoke on a regular basis, while among adults in the same area, more and more women are developing the habit, a survey published yesterday shows. According to figures released by Thessaloniki University’s department of medicine, 35.1 percent of some 6,000 Thessaloniki senior high-school pupils polled are smokers, while the figure for all of western Macedonia is 29.7 percent. Schoolboys in Kastoria (42.4 percent) and schoolgirls in Kozani (33.3 percent) were the heaviest smokers recorded. The lowest number of smokers among both sexes was in Grevena. The department of medicine also carried out a survey of 7,000 adult smokers in the area aged between 28 and 42, which found that 57.7 percent of local men and 34 percent of women smoke regularly. But the number of women smokers is growing at 3 percent annually, while that of men is declining by 2 percent.
