Ex parliamentary speaker Constantopoulou to start own party, Sailing for Freedom

Former parliamentary speaker Zoe Constantopoulou, who broke away from SYRIZA last summer, is to found her own party, to be called Sailing for Freedom, next week, she announced on Friday.

The party is to be officially founded on Tuesday, according to an announcement which said the new group would strive "to liberate the people and our country of the shackles of the memorandum," referring to the country's loan agreement with international creditors.

Former SYRIZA lawmaker Rachil Makri, a staunch supporter of Constantopoulou, was among the first to hail the formation of the new party and its "collective struggle" against the memorandum.

Constantopoulou had declared her intention to start her own party in an interview with Skai television channel last month, noting that her aim was to bring about the collapse of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's leftist-led coalition.
