Fresh bid to stop pollution from Sea Diamond wreck off Santorini
The government has assembled up a nine-member team to help local authorities protect the marine environment around the wreck of the Sea Diamond cruise ship which sank off the coast of Santorini in 2007 and led to the drowning of two people.
The team’s mission, authorities said, is to facilitate the work of the Municipal Port Fund of Santorini to remove the wreck and prevent further sea pollution. The team is composed of ministry, port and environmental officials.
Previous efforts to salvage the wreck had been abandoned after authorities deemed it too costly to remove the ship’s hull.
The ship, which belonged Louis Cruise Lines, sank when it hit a rocky outcrop under the sea.
