Septuagenarian sits national university entrance exams on Greek island
Proving that age is no obstacle to education, a 77-year-old woman from the northern Aegean island of Samothraki sat university entrance exams on Monday along with her significantly younger classmates.
Efthimia Stergiou, who completed high school this year in Alexandroupoli, northeastern Greece, said attending university and becoming a teacher was a childhood dream that didn’t materialize “because conditions at the time did not allow it.”
She added that her son, Savvas, was a source of inspiration from the outset, convincing her to go back to school.
Stergiou dropped out when she was in primary school, but, her son tweeted on Monday, she could not wait to sit the exams.
