SYRIZA MP resigns over multi-bill objections, will be replaced
SYRIZA MP Vassiliki Katrivanou resigned early on Monday after voting against parts of the multi-bill approved by Parliament late on Sunday.
Katrivanou voted for the draft legislation “in principle” but then voiced objections over two articles relating to the creation of a new privatization fund and the adoption of a contingent mechanism to automatically apply cuts if Greece’s public finances are not on track.
After the vote, Katrivanou announced that she would be stepping down from Parliament.
“It is a difficult decision, politically and personally, but one that I felt was necessary,” said the outgoing lawmaker from Athens. She said that she felt the government was increasingly unable to exercise control over its policies as a result of growing “oversight” from its lenders.
The fact that Katrivanou has handed back her seat means that she will be replace and the government will retain 153 out of 300 MPs in Parliament.
All the other coalition deputies voted for the omnibus bill after two days of debate in the plenary.
