Priest nabbed for robbing churches

A priest in the northern town of Kavala was arrested on Thursday on charges of stealing icons and violating laws for the protection of antiquities.

The 34-year-old priest, who has been suspended by his local parish, allegedly took part in the robberies of two churches and a monastery between 1997 and 2016 in the regions of Kavala and Ioannina.

Police confiscated 15 wooden icons, fragments of sacred relics, a bible and a horde of ecclesiastical items after searching two of his houses.
