Probe launched into drowning of tourist on boat tour

A 29-year-old Chinese tourist drowned on Wednesday during a visit to Zakynthos’s famous Navagio Beach. The 29-year-old had been on a boat tour which included a stop at the cove, also known as Shipwreck Beach, on the island’s northwestern coast.

The boat was some 15 meters from the shore when passengers raised the alarm that someone had fallen overboard.

Life vests were thrown into the water and people swam to the spot where the man had fallen to help but the 29-year-old had already drowned, according to witness reports.

The coast guard has launched an investigation into the exact circumstances of the drowning.

Separately, authorities in Attica were investigating the drowning on Wednesday of an unidentified man whose body was discovered in the area of Limanakia, in Vouliagmeni. The corpse bore several injuries including burns, according to sources.
