Eight Turkish officers part of Erdogan assassination plot, says Turkish daily

The eight Turkish soldiers who landed at Alexandroupoli airport, northeastern Greece, following a failed coup in Turkey were members of a group of military personnel who allegedly tried to assassinate President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last Friday, Turkish pro-government newspaper Star claimed on Tuesday.

The eight officers, who are currently in detention and preparing their defense on charges of illegal entry into Greece and violating Greek air space, claim they were not aware of the unfolding coup and fled aboard a helicopter after coming under fire by Turkish police.
