SYRIZA condemns police raid on Thessaloniki squats

The ruling SYRIZA party has condemned an operation by police in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, on Wednesday aimed at evacuating three buildings occupied by squatters.

“Criminalizing solidarity projects is a method that has nothing to do with the principles and values of the Left,” the party said in a statement.

Earlier Wednesday, police conducted separate raids at the now-defunct Megas Alexandros orphanage in the Ano Toumba neighborhood, the Mandalideio mansion on the coastal Nikis Avenue, and an eight-story building in downtown Thessaloniki.

Dozens of individuals were detained during the raids which prompted a sit-in protest by self-styled anarchists at SYRIZA’s Thessaloniki offices later in the day.
