Sit-ins dealt with on a case-by-case basis, leftist minister says

Alternate Minister for Citizens’ Protection Nikos Toskas has brushed off allegations that the left-led government has launched an indiscriminate drive to end sit-ins at public buildings.

“We are trying to take action – with moderation and prudence – on a case-by-case basis,” Toskas told Skai radio on Thursday.

“We tolerate different opinions, as long as… there is no violation of criminal law,” he said.

“It is not true to say that we have launched a crackdown on sit-ins or that we are opposed to libertarian ideas,” he said.

SYRIZA purists have accused the leftist-led government of veering away from the party’s fundamentals and embracing a “law and order” mentality following the forcible evacuation last month of anti-establishment protesters – chiefly foreigners who participated in the pro-refugee No Border Camp in Thessaloniki, in northern Greece – from occupied buildings.
